About the workThe human eye is not capable of seeing the level of detail included by Johann Erdmann Hummel in this view of the park. The artist was intent on meticulously rendering the architecture reflected in the still water. Optical phenomena fascinated the Berlin painter, who was commissioned to depict the orangery of Buch Castle by its owner. Today, little remains of the stately grounds outside the capital city. In 1809, Hummel became professor of perspective, architecture and optics at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.
