About the workAt the end of the Second World War, the Soviet Army advanced into Mecklenburg. To protect his mother and sisters, Günther Uecker boarded up the windows and doors of his family home on the Wustrow peninsula on the Baltic Sea. While a student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, he began to explore this experience in his art in 1956: the nails in his works pierce and seal, destroy and connect. For the artist, they signified both injury and healing. Here, they coalesce into an undulating structure. The black paint absorbs the light, lending the surface a mesmerising quality.
