In 1836, for example, one critic praised the depiction of the child on the grass in this motif. In the exhibition he had visited, he recalled that the work was “everyone’s favourite”. Many pictures by Deger, who was one of the leading religious painters in Düsseldorf in the 1830s, were reproduced as prints and thus became even more famous. The Art Association for the Rhineland and Westphalia gave this image to its members as a copperplate engraving.
