About the work"If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give the money to the poor" Jesus replied to a young man. The latter had asked him how he could attain eternal life. The Baltic-German painter Eduard von Gebhardt set the biblical story from the Gospel of Matthew in the 16th century and in the everyday world of ordinary people. With this approach, he modernised Protestant painting at the time. In addition, von Gebhardt was known for his finely observed depiction of various facial expressions. He taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1874-1912.
