About the work"Do not hold on to me!" is what Jesus allegedly said when he revealed himself to Mary Magdalene after his resurrection. This moment is depicted here calmly and in bright colours; the figures barely seem animated. A North German painter who spent most of his life in Rome, Friedrich Overbeck was a leading member of the Lukasbund (Brotherhood of Saint Luke) founded there. This Christian community of artists drew on the working methods and pictorial formats of the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance.
