on display, room 016 About the workWilhelm Schmurr was 24 years old and still studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy when he realised this life-size portrait of fellow painter Werner Heuser. With this full-length image, he confidently aligned himself with the old masters, although their portraits in this format were reserved for aristocrats, kings and high-ranking church dignitaries. The solid plane and clear outlines of the model, who is dressed entirely in black, allow his realistically painted face to stand out clearly.
