on display, room 003For these animals of the night, everything is a matter of life and death: while two martens are eating an eagle owl chick and being attacked by one of the parents, a bat is defending its young against a stoat. It is possible this motif was intended to refer to the circle of life. This work is a copy after a painting by Frans Snyders, a successful Flemish still life artist who specialised in the depiction of animals.
