About the workAnd I stand on the shore for long days, seeking the land of the Greeks with my soul,” declares Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Iphigenia in his play of the same name. The painter Anselm Feuerbach, who had lived in Italy for a long time, drew on this line and explored this ancient theme in three life-size paintings. Partly because of its darker colour scheme, this is the most melancholy of them all. Saved from sacrificial death, Iphigenia must serve as a lonely priestess on the island of Tauris. Feuerbach generalised this unfulfilled longing for her homeland by choosing the title “Am Meer” (On the Seashore).
