About the workAt an advanced age, the Berlin painter Max Liebermann often portrayed himself. He later said that he did not paint his self-portraits out of vanity, but primarily "regarded himself as an object that I could study thoroughly". In this case, the restrained choice of colour, among other things, focuses attention entirely on the artist's striking head. The painting was acquired by the Düsseldorf art museum in 1957. The institution had sold a similar self-portrait by the Jewish artist during the National Socialist era, hence this one was a substitute
