not on displayTwo aristocratic ladies observe a 16th-century poet, Torquato Tasso, lost in thought. Düsseldorf painter Carl Ferdinand Sohn referenced Johann Wolfgang Goethe's play "Torquato Tasso" without depicting a specific scene. Instead he focussed on a mood: the calm creativity of Tasso, shown as an introverted genius, as well as the curiosity and mutual bond between the two women. Sohn had previously painted only these women, without Tasso, and sold the pictures immediately. With this motif, he took up the theme in a somewhat broader sense.
