About the work After studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Andreas Achenbach travelled extensively to Scandinavia – including to the rough Norwegian coasts. Later in his studio he processed his impressions in paintings that were in great demand. In this work, the staggered pictorial elements and lighting guide the viewer's gaze through the detailed landscape. From the fallen tree, the path leads to the village and the brightly lit point of land behind it, before the opening sky leads us back over the waterfall to the calm fjord.
