About the workWilhelm Hambüchen regularly travelled from Düsseldorf to the Belgian and Dutch coasts in order to paint. According to his wife, this work was created in the South Holland coastal resort of Katwijk. The old woman in the picture is said to have been a well-known figure there; she would beg for fish that she then sold in the village. Many artists who were interested in open-air painting and simple fishing scenes would meet in Katwijk in the summer, including several Düsseldorf painters.
