About the workLudwig Knaus studied in Düsseldorf, where he lived until 1861. In this small portrait, he immortalised Rosine, the wife of his fellow artist August de Laspée, who was 13 years his senior and had also worked in Düsseldorf. Both families later settled in Wiesbaden. Knaus was living in Paris in the year this picture was realised, so it is possible that he painted it there. Rosine de Laspée is wearing a red ribbon, the latest Parisian fashion accessory. Knaus made her look to the side with an enigmatic facial expression.
