About the workThe Schleswig-born painter Heinrich Petersen-Angeln, a graduate of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, devoted himself to motifs from the North Sea coast, particularly from the Netherlands. This landscape is probably also located there. The calm canal dominates the foreground. It is lined with red poppies and draws the eye across fields and pastures to the village in the background. But the young woman, lost in thought and knitting in front of a white gate, becomes the focal point. The harmony and clarity of the landscape emphasise this moment of tranquillity.
