About the work“Do not be afraid!” said the Archangel Gabriel when he told Mary that she would give birth to the Son of God. This is how the history of the birth of Jesus Christ is told in the Bible. While Mary is frightened in some depictions, here she appears grateful and humble. Ernst Deger painted this motif shortly after studying under Wilhelm Schadow at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Following in his footsteps, Deger embodies an emphatically Christian art form. He became known for commissioned works such as his painting of the Madonna in St. Andreas’ Church in Düsseldorf, which was distributed as a print.
