About the workOnly a few paintings by the Flemish artist Jodocus van Winghe have survived and his life is poorly documented. What is recorded is that he travelled from Belgium to Italy to study and then via France to Germany, where he settled in Frankfurt am Main. Acquired around 1693 by Elector Johann Wilhelm for his collection of paintings in Düsseldorf, this work portrays the biblical scene in which Delilah cuts Samson’s hair, enabling the Philistines to blind him. In his love for Delilah, he had previously revealed to her that his hair was the secret to his superhuman strength.
