not on displayBertha Caroline Sußmann-Hellborn was 28 years old and the mother of three at the time this painting was created. The daughter of a banker and wife of the successful Berlin entrepreneur and sculptor Louis Sußmann-Hellborn is depicted standing in a luxuriously furnished interior. The Düsseldorf-trained painter Ludwig Knaus portrayed her as a wealthy bourgeois woman. With her self-assured body language and exquisite Biedermeier gown, she represents an elite that only emerged in the course of the 19th century.
