About the workWith his designs for a frieze portraying a peasants’ fair, Adolph Schroedter won first prize in a competition held by the Kunstverein Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf Art Association) in 1846, which called for pictures “to decorate rooms”. Schroedter’s entry included seven paintings of scenes from a rural festival on zinc plates. The artist intended for them to furnish “rich people’s halls”. The frieze is composed of dancing figures, depictions of a pair of lovers and a circle of gentlemen, as well as a tavern scene and a brawl.
