About the workIn 1907, the German painter Karl von Kalckreuth and his family settled on the newly constructed Eddelsen estate near Hamburg. The garden was designed in the spirit of the nation’s reform movement, which advocated a return to a more natural way of life. The idea came from his friend, the art historian and educator Alfred Lichtwark. This garden is the subject of many of his late paintings. Here he emphasized how his daughter, wife and one of his pupils quietly tended to the plants. The open gate to the forest mediates the connection between designed and wild nature.
