About the workDiana, the goddess of hunting, was described in Roman mythology as both a strong, protective woman and a chaste beauty. Her aloofness is the subject of this painting by Arnold Böcklin, who lived in Rome for many years and is considered one of the “Deutschrömer” (German Romans). He emphasises the contrast between the lustful fauns, hybrid creatures that are half-goat, half-human, and the partially naked, sleeping Diana. There is only near contact between these two extremes of libidinousness and self-control, of nature and culture: the faun at the rear restrains his friend. The Hamburg collector Eduard L. Behrens owned this picture for a long time, but he was forced to sell it before emigrating in 1939 due to the persecution he faced during the Nazi era as a Jew. The painting entered into the possession of the German Reich via the art dealer Maria Almas-Dietrich. The work was intended for Adolf Hitler’s “Führermuseum” in Linz, as a sticker on the back confirms.
