About the workThe Dutch landscape painter Joseph August Knip brought back around 80 oil studies from his time spent in Italy between 1809 and 1812. They served as models for larger compositions, which is probably also the case for this unsigned depiction of pine trees typical of the Mediterranean region. The artist emphasised their outlines against the clear sky. Having studied in Paris and various other locations, Knip travelled to Italy on a stipend from the Dutch King Louis Napoléon. From 1812 he lived in the Netherlands and Paris. He had to stop painting when he lost his eyesight in 1832.
