About the work
The side panels of Christian winged altars can be opened and closed so that different images are made visible. The five panels of this altar ended up in various collections; the Kunstpalast owns these inner wings. Shown below Saint Peter and Mary Magdalene are representations of patrons. They commissioned this artwork and ask that prayers be said for them. The small figure is possibly a son of the family who died young – at that time, children wore long gowns. It is also striking that men and women were separated from each other in the two panels.
