About the workThe five senses embodied by female figures – smell, taste, touch, hearing and sight – sit at a table in the forest. The painter has also echoed these senses in the landscape: magnificent flowers exude fragrances; a small monkey tastes fruits. The music of the lute player is accompanied by the birds, one of which pecks a woman’s hand in an allusion to the sense of touch. The sense of sight, however, is represented by the viewers of the painting themselves. Abraham Govaerts was potentially assisted with these figures by Ambrosius Francken II. Such collaboration between specialists was common at the time.
