About the workMax Beckmann was ostracised by the National Socialists and dismissed from his role as professor of painting at the Frankfurt Städelschule in 1933. In 1937 he emigrated to Amsterdam. This portrait of his second wife Mathilde – née von Kaulbach, whom he nicknamed “Quappi” – was realised shortly before the end of World War II. Beckmann noted his progress and colour changes in this work several times in his diaries, which spanned August and September 1944. During his exile in Amsterdam, Beckmann frequently painted Quappi; in most of these images she appears introverted and withdrawn.
