About the workThe electrification of cities started to occur around 1900. Compared to gas lighting, electric light was far less dangerous. However, the uniform lifelessness of this light source was perceived as a disadvantage. New types of lighting fixtures had to be invented – a task to which a number of artists devoted themselves. This lamp from the small Bohemian glassworks Joh. Lötz Witwe, which was highly successful during this period, has the practical purpose of creating a particular ambience and is simultaneously a light sculpture.
