About the workIn Cologne’s “Stange” and Düsseldorf’s “Altbierglas”, the tradition of straight-sided “Stangengläser” or “pole glasses” continues to this day. Beer has been drunk out of them since the sixteenth century, from the Netherlands to East Prussia. Although they were produced in large quantities, these kinds of glasses have rarely remained intact. The rich decoration of this glass is extraordinary; apart from this example, there are only a few known fragments of similar works of art from that time. However, the appearance is deceptive, for the foot originally belonged to another glass. A restorer has skilfully adapted it to fit the otherwise well-preserved glass.
