About the workWhen Tapio Wirkkala presented Finnish design at the 9th Milan Triennale in 1951, it was an international novelty. The carver and wood sculptor had begun in 1947 with designs for the Iittala glassworks. The ice-like character of this bowl corresponds to the image of the country in the far north and at the same time represents a modern approach to light, shadow and movement. Wirkkala’s designs bridged the gap between handicraft and industrial production. Their influence on the design of the 1950s and 1960s reached far beyond Finland.
