About the workThe foot and shaft of this vessel look positively tiny; they do not seem to belong to the delicate cup above. In fact, there are many similar specimens in other museums, but thus far it has been impossible to ascertain their function more precisely through archaeological excavations. Could they have been oil lamps that were inserted into their sockets in such a way that the lower part was no longer visible? The goblet proves that decorative prunts were a feature of Islamic glass art one to two centuries before they became popular in Central Europe.
