About the workIn early antiquity, glass was considered an artificially created stone. In the twentieth century, it became the model for the plastics industry, which was still in its nascency. This bowl is cut like stone, and feels like it, too. Its shape, colours and pattern allude to these new materials. The Venetian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa turned to the origins of glass art and understood how to translate traditional glass techniques into a modern language. Scarpa worked for the then fledgling Venini glassworks for ten years, from 1933 to 1943. His work continues to shape Venetian glass design to this day.
