About the workThe figure belongs to a series of depictions of pawns. Like chess pieces, they are placed on pedestals and their moves are simplified. Barovier used translucent and optically distorting glass for the internal drawing. Ercole Barovier was a glassmaker through and through. His family was probably connected with the art of glassmaking in Murano as early as the 13th century. His father owned one of the most important glassworks of his time and Ercole was involved in the production of new glass colours and optical effects as well as in shaping.
