About the workThe plate depicts the Devil in the guise of an ancient king, from whose crown the Archangel Gabriel strikes off a prong in combat. According to legend, this fragment was used to forge the Holy Grail. The miraculous vessel is said to have accompanied Jesus at the Last Supper and during the Crucifixion. In the medieval Arthurian legend, the knights who seek the Grail are portrayed differently in the various versions of the story. The goblet depicts King Titurel gathering the Knights of the Grail around him, including Parsifal. Through his inner strength and compassion, Parsifal succeeds in finding the mysterious object.
