About the workThe devil is in the detail here. On the plate, Lucifer is depicted as an ancient king; in battle, the archangel Gabriel knocks a spike out of his crown. According to legend, the Holy Grail was forged from this and went on to accompany Jesus at the Last Supper and his death on the cross, before eventually reaching Britain. King Titurel is depicted on the cup, summoning the Knights of the Holy Grail from medieval Arthurian legends. With his design for the “Parcival Series”, the Viennese poet and historian Richard von Kralik created a visual taste of his later treatise “Die Gralsage” (The Grail Saga), published in 1907.
