About the workThe heat from the furnace makes mouth-blown glass appear polished. If the surface is then frosted, the contours of the vessel become more clearly defined. The glass takes on more body, as it were. For the bowls and vases in the “corrosi” series, the Venetian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa had the glass irregularly etched with acid-treated sawdust. This gives the products the appearance of archaeological objects that have been corroded by acids in the soil. The subsequent, barely noticeable iridescence caused by the evaporation of gases resembles a thin film of oil.
