About the work“The daring daintiness of expression cannot be surpassed”: this is how one author praised Karl Koepping’s glasses in 1897. Because of their decorative imitation of nature, they became the epitome of Art Nouveau around 1900. Koepping was a graphic artist who became famous for his prints based on well-known paintings. He turned to glass art between 1895 and 1904. The lamp glassblower Friedrich Zitzmann and later the Glasfachschule Ilmenau (Ilmenau Glass School) created the glasses according to his specifications, which he then painted.
