About the workOf all known bowls of this style, this one made in Düsseldorf is the largest and best preserved. It attests to the high quality of glassmaking during the late Middle Ages, which disappeared in the middle of the fourteenth century due to the severe plague epidemic. The blue decoration was applied freely and with a deft, quick hand. This luxury vessel is thought to have been excavated from a lavatory shaft in Mainz around 1975. It probably belonged to the former “Haus zur Großen Eiche” (House at the Great Oak Tree), which was inhabited by the aristocratic Salmann family during that period.
