About the workCarlo Maratti became one of Rome’s most famous painters in the 17th century. With these studies, he prepared angel figures for a painting by his teacher, Andrea Sacchi. Drawings from his apprenticeship reveal that the young Maratti was interested in depicting the human body in motion. In the detailed studies on the right side of the sheet, he experiments with rendering an outstretched arm. On the left side, even the depiction of a torso appears dynamic due to a suggested twist.
