About the workNude studies were a central element of formal art education until well into the twentieth century. Drawing nude models was regarded as an important exercise for learning how to depict the human form realistically. This work on paper was created by the Bologna-based painter Felice Cignani. The use of red chalk is related to the properties of the material: suitable for both fine lines and strong hatching, its warm colour complements the reproduction of the human body.
