About the workThis sketch shows two views of a left hand in slightly different poses as well as drapery – folds of cloth – with a reclining body visible underneath. This is a preparatory study for a painting of the Virgin Mary on her deathbed. The Roman artist Carlo Maratta successfully alluded to the dying woman’s body through the depiction of the fabric alone: the elaborately arranged material becomes a signifier that represents Mary’s presence.
