About the workGestures are of great significance in art history, as they allow us to draw inferences about the communication between figures in images. The Rome-based painter Carlo Maratta made these two studies with the help of a model in preparation for an altarpiece. They are sketches of the hands of Saint Charles Borromeo, who holds out his arms in adoration of the Virgin Mary.
