About the workThe young man with the well-proportioned face gazes attentively out of the picture to the right. The Florentine painter Lorenzo di Credi precisely outlined the nose, mouth and eye area with a metalpoint stylus, added darker shading, and then highlighted them with an opaque white. The result is that the face stands out from the background in a three-dimensional manner. The lifelike impression of this portrait study reveals di Credi’s skill as a draughtsman. Together with the universal genius Leonardo da Vinci, he trained under the influential Florentine painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio, whose workshop he later took over.
