About the workArtists often depict themselves at work in self-portraits. The Italian Baroque painter Carlo Maratti, however, has put the focus on his ageing face with its pensive gaze. Is the artist contemplating the course of his career, remembering all that he has achieved? Maratti had risen to become one of the most important figures in Roman art and culture in the seventeenth century. His high-ranking patrons included seven popes, the imperial house of the Holy Roman Empire, the French king, and many other ecclesiastical and secular dignitaries.
