For this reason, the evangelist was already considered the patron saint of artists as early as the Middle Ages and became the namesake for associations such as the Guild of Saint Luke and the Accademia di San Luca, the art academy in Rome. With this etching, Italian artist Simone Cantarini also followed in the tradition of Luke by depicting the latter painting Mary with the infant Jesus.
