About the workThe image is dominated by the powerful apparition of the winged Nemesis. The goddess of divine retribution and revenge is floating in front of an empty sky, a pear-shaped goblet representing reward in one hand, a bridle alluding to punishment in the other. Her feet rest on a sphere symbolising the fickle nature of fortune. The scenery depicts the town of Klausen in the Eisack Valley in South Tyrol. The wealth of detail in the image demonstrates the Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer’s expertise in the printmaking technique of copperplate engraving.
