About the workDürer’s "Life of the Virgin", a series of 20 works, tells the story of an extraordinary woman’s life. According to Christian belief, Mary was chosen even before her birth to bring God’s son into this world. When Mary passed away, she was taken up to heaven to mediate between God and the faithful. Dürer’s woodcuts were part of a book that was read in women’s convents and other places. The Mother of God in Christianity was a role model for the nuns, who also dedicated their lives to the service of God.
