on display, room 003In this series of copperplate engravings entitled "Roman Heroes", Dutch graphic artist Hendrick Goltzius presents generals who have gone down in the history of Rome for their outstanding actions. In each case, the war hero stands in the foreground as a muscular strongman, who can also be seen in the background accomplishing his feat. Goltzius dedicated this series to Rudolf II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, thus placing him in the direct succession of the ancient heroes.
