not on displayIn this work, the Dutch artist Maria Roosen turns her gaze toward the interior of the body: blood seems to flow through the chambers of a glass heart. Sharp elements protrude dangerously from the seemingly fleshlike mass. Yet this impression is deceptive: the compressed glass organ is cold and rigid.
A "cold heart" is commonly regarded as a metaphor for a lack of emotion. Roosen subverts this meaning through her use of glass: owing to the material’s inherent fragility, the heart remains vulnerable and potentially breakable.
