About the workA newly modeled image of the sky appears in the dome. The artist Evan Roth is interested in cartography, specifically in the representation of celestial bodies through maps. This requires three-dimensional formations to be transferred onto two-dimensional surfaces, resulting in distortions of shape and scale. Throughout history, rules and worldviews have influenced the way the world and the universe are represented in maps, including the position and size of individual elements within them. Roth created algorithms that allow him to apply historical cartographic methods dating back to 150 BC to photographs. Here, he has applied these algorithms to the sky above Turin, Italy. How does our perception of the firmament change when we view it through an altered mode of representation?
