About the workPress photography doesn’t just capture political power plays – it carries forward stories of influence and rivalry. It operates in the space between documentation and staging, opening the door to different interpretations. This is also true of the picture of Volodymyr Zelenskyy with Friedrich Merz and other politicians in 2025: the positioning of the figures suggests equality and close consultation. The US President Donald Trump does not appear in person in the picture, but is present via the mobile phone lying on the table. The photo was taken by the German government’s official photographer.
