About the workWith courage and wit, Hans Ticha painted in defiance of GDR structures: against the control of the ruling party, its propaganda and its self-presentation. In 1965, Ticha left his official position as a teacher to study art in Berlin -Weißensee. He made a name for himself as a book illustrator, while hiding his state-critical oil paintings in his studio out of fear of persecution. Music repeatedly played a role: the state-promoted brass music is presented here as a sound body of geometric rigour. Human and instrument merge into a symbol of society’s appropriation of the individual.
