About the workOn 2 May 2011, the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency carried out a military operation in Pakistan that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden, leader of the terrorist network al-Qaeda. Then US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton followed the operation on a screen in the Situation Room at the White House in Washington, DC. This photograph offers an unusual glimpse into a moment of political decision-making. Here, power is expressed not through action but through focused observation and responsibility. The photograph was taken by Pete Souza, then Chief Official White House Photographer.
